If I can just find the fabric then I’ll be all set!

On the Water

I used to sail pretty often. In fact, I used to go out everyday when I lived in the tropics, as I worked as a bar tender on a 149 foot schooner! There were often tons of people on board, everybody enjoying the air and water. Sometimes there would be musicians on board and people would get up to dance, doing their best to remain upright and steady on their feet despite the moving deck. Sometimes I’d abandon my post at the bar to go join the dance floor — dancing is kind of irresistible.

Have you ever noticed that you can’t be in a mood, can’t be carrying around a stinky attitude and go dance? Something about it seems to melt off the ragged edges in us.  That’s pretty good therapy if you ask me, for anything that ails you!

Anyway, these days the boats are smaller and I’m on them less frequently but I still love it when I can get out there and enjoy a few hours and a new view on life.

We arrived at a state of the art studio, ready to learn how to make paper. There were large vats set up with a watery substance in them which turned out to be the paper pulp in water, in shades of white, purple and blue.

There were screened trays and sponges and sheets of plexi glass waiting for us. To start with, we dipped our trays gently into the vat of watery pulp, scooping it up and onto our screens. Then we pressed out the water using a sponge and our hands before transferring it onto a sheet of plexi glass on which it would then be decorated and eventually dried.

We decorated our sheets while they were still pretty wet, using leaves, glitter, feathers, thread, anything thin enough to be absorbed into the paper and still be fairly flat.

Once we completed our decorations, we stacked our pieces between heavy pieces of felt, one on top of another, covered with a board and a very heavy weight on top to press out the excess water that still remained in the paper. After 15 – 30 minutes, we removed the weights and the sheets were ready to be laid out for 36 hours which will complete the drying process.

It was so much fun — can’t wait to go back and make some more!

Love after Love

Love After Love
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

Love’s road

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.
